101 Ideas To Help Your Kids Get More Exercise

Written by Andrew Nielsen, last updated on 12/1/2022

Ride bikes.

Every kid should explore this beautiful earth from the vantage point of there very own bike. It's also a great activity because parents and kids can enjoy it together for most of life. Find some good trails and get your ride on!

Trampolines.

You can jump on your own backyard tramp, small indoor tramp, or you could take your kids out to your local bouncehouse. Better yet, do all those things on occassion!

Stair Slide

Stair slide is a product that turns your stairs into a fun slide for your kids. No more relying on risky cardboard or sleeping bags!

Go for daily walks.

Parents and kids need lots of movement to stay sane from the stress of each day. Daily walks are easy to do compared to most other exercise activites, so it's a great way to help the whole family get exercise.

Dance.

When parents are trying to get a few chores done, it can be hard to find a way to entertain the kids that involves movement. Instead of just letting them watch a show or play video games, turn on something that lets them get their groove on for 10-15 minutes. This could be a good kids movement YouTube channel or a fun song that's activated from a smart speaker. This is a double bonus because it gets them ready for more seated activities or bedtime.

Go to the park.

Kids love the park. As a parent, it feels like a lot to take your kids to the park everyday, but you coud make a goal to go at least 2-3x per week. Remember, movement is medicine for their little bodies!

Have fun hiking.

There are plenty of hikes that are appropriate for kids of all ages. Do a little research on your local area and hit the trails. Aim for a hike every week or two. It's a great way to help kids get exercise and have fun as a family.

Video Games

Video games and screen time get a bad rap quite often. However, video games are plain old fun! There are a multitude of video games available that can help kids get moving such as games like Ring Fit for example.

Swimming

Swimming is one of the best activities that can be done all year round. Go to the outdoor pool in the summer and indoor pool during the other parts of the year.

Yoga

Yoga can be a great exercise for those moments of the day where "calm movement" is needed. We do this before bedtime in my family occassionally as well as after waking up to get us ready for the day.

Play tag

Tag is a classic that can be played inside or outside. I prefer outside but if you stumped how to kid your kids energy out at a moment's notice, any movement works!

Hide and Seek

This is another classic game. I prefer doing this one inside and have plenty  of good memories hiding in my parent's closets and. other nooks and crannies.

Let them run on a treadmill with your supervision. Kids want to do what they see their parents doing. Give them a chance to be like Mommy and Daddy from time to time.

Lasertag.

Take your kids to a local fun center or buy your own set of laser tag guns.

Hopscotch.

It's funny how something as simple as a hopscotch playmat can inspire so much movement in kids. Give it a try!

Intertube Jumparoo

The most pouplar one of these is called a Jungle Jumparoo, but there's a lot of different brand names popping up. Main idea is a fun intertube with some central bars to hold on and jump around on.

Twister.

Fun game that gets kids on all fours and helps them build strength and get a good stretch while having fun!

Mini-golf.

Mini-golf is a much-loved game for kids and family members of all ages. It's a great idea for exercise because you're constantly walking from hole to hole.

Jump Rope.

Jumping is such an easy way to get good exercise and get your hear beating. Using a jumprope while jumping just gives that slice of fun your kids need to keep things fun.

Pogo Stick.

These were trendy when I was a teenager. They're still super fun and pack a mean balance challenge punch in addition to the fun exercise your kids will get with one.

Roller Skates or Rollerblades

Get to your roller skating rink or just buy a pair of roller blades and find some nicely paved trails to ride on.

Hockey with rollerblades

A follow-up idea to the last one. Make rollerblading even more fun by get some hockey sticks and goals and playing hockey even if you don't live in a place with a lot of snow or ice.

Sports

Basketball, baseball, soccer, track and field, cross country, etc. Sports is one of the best ways to help your kids have fun, learn important life skills, and get intense exercise!

Run through the sprinklers

Hope this brings a smile to your face just like it did for me. Felt like forever ago, but I still remember the joy of running through sprinklers at home or even at school grounds sometimes.

Water Balloon/Water Gun Fight

If it's warm or summer time where you live, a water balloon fight is a super fun way to get exercise while having a blast. Add in some water guns to make the water battle even more exciting!

Dodgeball

If you have the ability to round up several friends, dodgeball is a super fun game. Lots of bounce house entertainment centers have dodgeball built right into their centers now too.

Golf

This might be more for your kids who are a bit older, but you. never know when your young ones will be ready to swing the irons. Golf involves (or can if you don't a cart) a lot of walking, so it's great for exercise while having fun!

Snow sports

Skiing is intense exercise on the legs and a decent workout for the whole body. Same for snowboarding. Cruise the powder and help kids have the time of their life while in the moutain tops.

Go to a zoo, museum, or theme park!

Zoos and museums are not only great ways to entertain kids, but they are great ways to help your kids get exercise. Theme parks are also great for exercise because of all the walking that takes place.

Exercise with Mom and Dad

Mom and Dad usually do lots of boring video workouts. Okay, it's boring compared to all these fun activities we're listing here in this article wouldn't you say? Anyway, let them join you in your workouts. It's fun for them and great for their body.

Buy your own jumphouse for your family

If you don't have the chance to get out to your local bounce center too often, you might consider buying your own inflatable bounce house. I got one last year on a deal during Black Friday, and I've already got more than my money's worth from it. The kids never realize how much exercise they're getting, because they're too busy having fun.

Boating

Obviously, this will depend on your kids' ages, but it's a tremendous exercise based leisure activity that the whole family will love. Water skiing, wakeboarding, etc will give you and the kids who are old enough to participate a full body workout!

Ride a manual scooter.

Everything is going electric. Bikes, scooters, you name it! Scooters that are simply human powered are still a great choice for fun and exercise for kids.

Skateboarding.
You wouldn't catch me on a skateboard, but it sure could be a cool and fun way to exercise for the young ones in your family!

Fly a kite.
Classic yet timeless activity that will delight a child time and time again when the wind is right! No need to think about running when they are thinking about the kite!

Play catch.

Hundreds of pictures capture Dads and their sons doing this very activity. It's an awesome and fun activity for both parents and kids alike.

Play games like tennis or pickle ball.

Since when does exercise and fun have to feel separate? If that's how you do exercise, you might be doing it wrong!

Ultimate Frisbey.

Scavenger hunt.

Setup an obstacle course.

Go for a jog/run.

Go to the gym.

Foursquare.

Wallball.

Red rover.

Simon Says.

Raquetball.
